- UDDINGSTON, LANARKSHIRE

Owned by former Celtic great Harry Hood since 1976, Angels is now run by his children, Siobhan, Lisa and Nicky, and they’re dedicated to maintaining their dad’s high standards.

Scotland player turned publican Harry, 72, may be officially retired but he’s still an old-fashioned landlordrd at heart and insists on popping in every evening to help clear tables or chat to customers.

And that’s part of the charm of Angels.

The old Victorian villa has become a landmarkk in the Lanarkshire town, offering a warm welcome to all types of customer from the regulars who’ve been drinking there for years to the young crowd who turn up for late-night weekend opening.

First-class food, sports coverage, great drinks and unsurpassed customer service are what the pub is all about and the family are delighted that their efforts have helped them win their second nomination for Sunday Mail Pub of the Year. Harry’s daughter Siobhan Edwards said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have made it down to the last four.f “AnAngels won this comcompetition in 1981 and the winner’s mirror still hahas pride of place in ththe bar. “We never thothought we would be nomnominated again – 35 yeyears later. We’ll keep our fingfingers crossed we can go a bit ffurther but we’re so chuffed to have made it this far. “Angels is such a strong community pub. Some of our customers from back then still drink at the bar now. Some of our staff are the children of couples who met in Angels. “It’s fabulous we’re still at the heart of the town after all this time.”
