Terror as wall collapses on street
Passers- by escaped injury after the wall of a rooftop restaurant collapsed on to a street in Glasgow’s west end.
The drama unfolded near a pub with outside seating yesterday when the wall at La Riviera, on Benalder Street, Partick, gave way.
Lynn Fisher, manager of nearby charity shop Sense Scotland, said: “It was so lucky there wasn’t a fatality.
“It’s helped by the fact it happened on a Saturday.
“On any other day during the week, that street would be a lot more busy because of people going in to sign on at the JobCentre next to where the collapse happened.”
Emergency ser v ices responded to calls at about 12pm and road closures and diversions were put in place.
One person was assessed a nd d i s cha r ged by paramedics but no one was taken to hospital.
A local deli owner claimed it was inevitable that the wall – which neighbours s ome three-storey tenements – would go down.
Elaine Abercromby said: “On Friday, my partner was walking past the building with the dog and noticed it looked bevelled.
“It was obvious that it wasn’t safe but it had been like that for a while.”
A Scottish Fire and Re scue Ser v ic e spokesperson said: “The restaurant was closed when the section of its roof garden wall collapsed.
Management at La Riviera did not respond to messages left with staff asking for comment.
