Stuart Walker gave champs Cove Rangers a winning start in their title defence with a crucial late strike at Inverurie Locos.

The Cove defender struck with only three minutes left as the Aberdeen club – on cup duty last week – kicked off their campaign late with a 3-2 victory.

Locos made the breakthrou­gh after 44 minutes when Jordan Leyden tucked away the opener. But recent Doncaster Rovers’ trialist Blair Yule equalised for Cove in first-half stoppage time.

Cove led through a Mitch Megginson penalty, calmly converted after 56 minutes by the summer signing from Alloa. Then Andy Hunter drew the match level again after 61 minutes before Walker’s winner.

Cove boss John Sheran was downbeat despite the win and said: “We could have done better.

“We weren’t allowed to play and that’s credit to Locos. They wi l l feel aggrieved not getting a point out of the game”

Gary Weir opened the scoring before Steven Anderson tucked away a second-half double.

Buckie Thistle romped to a 9- 2 triumph away to Strathspey Thistle to top the league on goal difference – with five goals from ex-Brora striker John McLeod.
