DANCE GURU’S GIG IN HIPSTER LAUNDRETTE

- Craig Williams and Craig McDonald

Take one supercool DJ and give him a 90-minute spin in the unofficial HQ of the trendiest postcode in Scotland.

Ladies and gentleman, we may just have reached peak hipster.

DJ Jack master’ s gig at a laundrette in Glasgow is already one of the hottest tickets in the UK.

The wash house, called The Majestic, is in Finnieston – a neighbourhood named this year as Britain’s hippest area to live.

Just 30 people will squeeze in beside baskets and dryers for the event on October 15.

Finnieston has seen a transformation from an area marked by industry and warehouses to one known for trendy bars and restaurants.

Jack master, from nearby Hillhead, was named Best DJ by DJ magazine in 2014 and is nominated for Best House DJ at awards in Ibiza next month. He is also on the front page of this month’s Mixmag publication.

The Majestic’s boss Linda Gordon said: “We’re not used to the attention and it is a bit odd.

“But the area has transformed itself over the past 30 years since the laundrette opened.

“The local hipsters come in now to get their things washed.

“We have events from time to time and the gig should be great.

“Although it’s a very small venue, the shape of the place is actually quite suited to a DJ.”

Chris Edmonds, a member of staff at the Argyle Street laundrette, said: “We’re very pleased he’s playing here but I do think it’s a bit strange.

“People will be saying, ‘I was at a gig in a laundrette the other night and it was amazing.’

“A lot of people pop their heads in here for a look, to read the flyers and to see what’s on in Glasgow. We don’t mind it at all.

“Then when they are in, they ask us how much it will cost to get their suits dry cleaned and things like that. It’s two birds with one stone.”

Jackmaster said: “I love vinyl and I love fresh linen, so I can’t wait for the gig.”

The Majestic has had well-known clients over the years because it’s close to venues such as the SECC.

Singer Lionel Richie’s sequinned shirt was accidentally damaged when staff followed instructions to give it a machine wash.

The Majestic gig is part of the Red Bull Music Academy UK, which takes place on consecutive weekends in Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Leeds next month.

Red Bull said they chose the Majestic as a venue because it was an “iconic social hub”, adding that they had lined up “quite literally the freshest party of the weekend”.

A free ballot to win tickets is open until September 13.
