Clegg’s in at double after gold
Scots runner nets gold Libby Clegg says her celebrations are on ice until she has hunted down a Paralympic double after picking up Scotland’s first gold.
Her T11 100 metres win came after breaking the world record with a run of 11.91 seconds in the heats, then she was disqualified and reinstated on appeal before winning the final in 11.96sec.
Visually- impaired sprinter Clegg, who won silvers in 2008 and 2012, is now after a 200m gold in an event she netted a world record in London in July.
Clegg said: “It was a whirlwind day. I set the world record in the morning, then I got disqualified.
“It has been a bit exhausting but it is good to end on a high, although I am a bit shellshocked.
“I’m sure it will hit me in a few days what I have achieved, although maybe it can wait until after the 200m final.”
There looks set to be a second Scots athletics gold today with Jo Butterfield starting as red-hot favourite in the F51 club throw.
The Glasgow-based thrower (37) has had a meteoric rise since she was paralysed during spinal surgery and after taking the European and world titles inside 12 months, she should win – although, she does have the discus in reserve later this week.
Butterfield said: “I have the confidence that if I throw as good as I have, it’s there.”
Meanwhile, partially-sighted Alison Patrick and compatriot Hazel Smith take part in today’s PT5 class paratriathlon.
