ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE Guardiola grabs derby spoils as Jose pays the penalty

Apart from a 20-minute spell either side of half-time, Manchester United’s players were left chasing shadows as Guardiola served notice that there is a new Special One in town.

Back then the intense rivalry between Guardiola at Barcelona and Mourinho at Real Madrid was at its height.

There were handshakes before and after their first Manchester derby although in between everyone inside Old Trafford forgot about the pair.

To United’s credit they found an instant response to going two down as Zlatan Ibrahimovi­c set up a second half that had everything besides goals.

However, Mourinho did morph into Sir Alex Ferguson by claiming they were undone by Mark Clattenbur­g’s failure to see two “100 per cent” penalties. City defender Aleksandar Kolarov lost a front tooth after an altercatio­n with Marouane Fellaini’s elbow.

But the Citizens still had plenty to smile about as Guardiola made it nine wins over Mourinho in 17 meetings.

The Catalan said: “We played very well, especially in the first half.

“They changed their style in the second half, hitting long balls and they had some chances because they are stronger than us like that.
