Stevie admits his Saints stunner was a long shot

-

Steven MacLean admits he strayed out of his comfort zone to help send Saints up to fifth in the table.

The striker’s wonder strike from 25 yards in the triumph over Partick Thistle wasn’t his usual penalty-box distance.

But the 34- year- old was delighted with the goal and handed the credit to his new brand of boots. He said: “I didn’t think I could score from there either! To be fair, I had a shot from outside the box in the first half as well – it must be these new boots.

“It just opened up and I hit it perfectly. I’ll take them when they come along because they don’t come around too often.

“I’ve maybe hit one like that when I was younger but as soon as you hit 30 you don’t actually think you can reach the goal from over 20 yards.

“Normally it’s from six yards and that’s my limit these days.”

Saints boss Tommy Wright claimed the Firhi l l triumph was the perfect response after successive defeats to Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle.

He said: “It’s good to bounce back and we deserved it. That was a good, solid performance with some moments of qual ity throughout it.

“We had one or two little scares but certainly weren’t under constant pressure.

“Steven McLean’s goal was a great finish.

“I keep telling him to get in the box because he doesn’t have the power to score from distance and then he pulls that one out.”
