Judge You’re a danger

- Craig McDonald

Sinclair lost an appeal against his record 37-year minimum jail term in March.

He was jailed for life in 2014 after being found guilty of raping and murdering 17-year-olds Christine Eadie and Helen Scott in 1977.

They were killed after a night out at the World’s End pub in Edinburgh in October that year. Sinclair was found guilty of the crimes after a five-week trial.

Sentencing him, judge Lord Matthews said that he was a “dangerous predator, who is capable of sinking to the depths of depravity”.

The conviction marked the first prosecution since changes to Scotland’s double jeopardy law.

The legal change meant Sinclair could be retried after the court case against him collapsed seven years previously. The judge ordered him to spend a minimum of 37 years in jail – the same number of years that the families of the girls had waited for justice.

Sinclair dropped an appeal last year against the conviction but continued in an attempt to have the term reduced, arguing it was excessive.

But Lady Paton, Lady Clark and Lord Malcolm said in a written judgment: “The sentencing judge concluded at the outset that a punishment part ‘in the high 30s’ should be imposed.

“That was his assessment of the gravity of the case.”
