Lucy won’t let her children watch soap as storylines are depressing
Former EastEnders star Lucy Benjamin doesn’t let her daughters watch the soap because it’s too depressing.
The actress feels the heavy storylines would be too much for Bessie, nine, and Rosie, f ive, to handle.
Lucy, 46, said: “I don’t watch EastEnders very much – I switch it on and don’t really know anybody.
“My kids don’t watch it because it can be quite depressing and downbeat. I know that if Bessie started to get into EastEnders it would never be off our screens.” Despite playing Lisa Fowler – the long-suffering partner of Phil Mitchell, who she shot in 2001 – for five years, Lucy’s children are unaware of her role on the soap.
She said: “I don’t think it resonates.
“Bessie doesn’t even acknowledge it. She knows I am an actress and I do di f ferent things. I don’t want to harp on about one thing, although it was a huge part of my life.”
And whi le Lucy refuses to rule out a return to Albert Square, she would only be tempted back by a plot that would see her reunited with on-screen daughter Louise.
She said: “If there was a decent storyline I’d be happy to go back and do a stint. I think I’d done my bit when I left – that chapter was closed.
“But if something came along – a decent, meaty story. I have a daughter in the show so I never say never. Lisa was a great character.”
Since leaving the soap, Lucy has won The X Factor: Battle Of The Stars and appeared on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.
In March, she celebrated a decade of marriage to businessman Richard Taggart. Lucy said: “People didn’t think it was going to last, but we have proved everybody wrong.
“It’s hard work and you have to learn to say sorry sometimes, meet in the middle.”
