Glen winner is one he wants to remember

-

Nico Rosberg left title rival Lewis Hamilton trailing in his wake as he romped to pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The German, who will start his 200th Formula One race today, was a crushing seven tenths of a second faster than Hamilton who could qualify only third.

Daniel Ricciardo split the Mercedes duo after he hauled his Red Bull on to the front row.

Hami lton holds a two-point advantage over Rosberg but by the time the chequered flag falls today he could find himself behind in the standings.

Rosberg, a winner of the last two grands prix, is enjoying a purple patch and his performance yesterday will surely rank as one of his best.

His quickest lap of one minute and 42. 584 seconds, at a circuit where Newtonmore matchwinner Glen MacKintosh can’t remember the goal that won the club their 31st Camanachd Cup yesterday – but it will live on in the memories of the fans.

The Scotland striker’s counter in three minutes was enough to see off Oban Camanachd 1-0 at An Aird.

Oban matched the champions all the way in front of 3000 supporters but they couldn’t blunt Newtonmore’s lethal weapon.

MacKintosh said: “I don’t really remember much about the goal.

“It broke out and it was just a snap-shot, really.

“But it was great to see it in the net.

“It was a close final but we worked really hard.”

I t wa s ev erg r e en MacKintosh that gave the Speyside outf it the platform to win the final.

A bad clearance from Gavin Stobart gave Evan he has failed to finish on the podium since 2008, will have lef t Hami lton scratching his head.

Rosberg said: “I’m happy with that one for my 200th grand prix. It’s one of my top three laps ever.

“I knew I had to pull one out of the bag.”

Hamilton said: “It has not been my weekend so far. Nico did a great job.”

Sebastian Vettel will start last on the grid after problems with his Ferrari.

He moaned ‘ this is stupid, we are losing time’ as mechanics tried to fix his car in the pits.
