Ace key to Scot’s glory bid

-

Jamie McLeary holed his first shot on day three of the Italian Open to win a £50,000 car and put him in his daughter’s good books.

The Scot returned to the Golf Club Milano course yesterday with nine holes of his rain-delayed second round still to play.

And McLeary couldn’t have asked for a better start as an ace at the parthree 10th won him the keys to a Mercedes Nuova Classe C Cabrio coupe.

His seven- year- old daughter Millie had told her father to buy an open top car and McLeary’s first European Tour hole in one saved him the expense.

The 35-year-old said: “I was really nervous on the next tee because I thought to myself, ‘ You can’t follow a hole in one with a poor tee shot at the next’.

“My daughter has been asking for a red car with no roof. Well, I’ve now got a silver car with red leather upholstery and no roof. I’m sure she will still be happy.” Luke Cranney bagged a debut hat-trick as Grange routed Gordonians 7-2 on day one of hockey’s first division season.

Dominic Wild claimed another two from setpieces while Callum Milne scored from the spot and Cammy Fraser netted.

Grove Menzieshill beat Western Wildcats 4-2 while Bromac Kelburne saw off Hillhead by the same score. Scot t i sh pot ter Anthony McGi l l reckons having to play an extra game could help rather than hinder his Shanghai Masters chances.

McGill will face Chinese amateur Chen Zifan in tomorrow’s wildcard round with a place in the main stage up for grabs.

He said: “It can work in your favour because you’ve got an extra competitive match to acclimatise and get your arm going.” Braehead Clan forward Callum Boyd insists any frosty reception from the Edinburgh Capitals fans today will be nothing more than fun and games.

The 22- year- old will return to Murrayfield for the first time since leaving the Capitals to join Braehead in the summer.

He said: “I’m expecting some fun and games at least and if they’re chirping me I know they’ll just be joking, trying to get in my head for the game.

“I know they still love me. Hopefully.”
