Charlotte Cops face shooting video call

-

Demonstrators have demanded police release video of the shooting of a black man in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The calls came hours after victim Keith Lamont Scott’s widow released her own cameraphone footage of the shooting.

Police have said Scott, 43, was armed but witnesses claim he only held a book.

Friday was the fourth night of demonstrations since Scott was shot dead.

The marchers carried a banner which read: “Just release the tapes,” as they walked peacefully through the city’s business district.

Police chief Kerr Putney said there is footage from at least one police body camera and one dashboard camera.

But he insisted that releasing the footage could inflame the situation.

He has said previously the video will be made public when he believes there is a “compelling reason”.

Footage recorded by Rakeyia Scott shows her repeatedly telling officers her husband is not armed and pleading with them not to shoot him.

After the gunshots, he can be seen lying face-down on the ground while his wife says: “He better live.”

Earlier in the week, the Charlotte protests turned violent.

Forty-four people were arrested after Wednesday’s protests, and one protester who was shot died in hospital on Thursday.

City officials said police did not shoot Justin Carr, 26, and a suspect is in custody.
