Gers ace Jason is back in groove and desperate to Holt down starting spot

- Andrew McInnes

Jason Holt is desperate to regain a regular slot in the Rangers team after returning from injury to play in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Holt, one of the Light Blues’ star men in their Championship title win, turned out in last Saturday’s draw against Ross County and got off the mark in Tuesday’s 5- 0 Betfred Cup quarter-final hammering of Queen of the South.

And he wants to keep the bal l rol l ing in today’s massive test against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Holt, 23, said: “I wanted to get back in training and impress the gaffer.

“I just concentrated on myself, did my best to get into the team and now it’s up to me to keep the jersey.

“For me it’s all about hard work. It’s never good to be injured at the start of the season but now I’m back and looking to keep my place.

“The disappointing thing last week was the 0- 0 result but the performance was good for the majority of the game. We wanted to build on that for Tuesday and got a convincing win.

“It’s always nice to get a goal – my first of the season – and I’m looking to build on that. I had a bit of tightness in my quad after being out for a while but I’m fine now.”

Holt grew up a Hearts fan in Edinburgh but is only too aware of the fierce rivalry between Rangers and the Dons and knows what to expect in the Granite City.

He said: “It will be the first experience for a lot of the players taking part in this game and we have been made well aware of the atmosphere to expect.

“We prepare as we would for any other game, work hard and treat it like another match, although we know what atmosphere to expect.

“It’s not hard to go into a contest like this with my playing style.

“We’ll stick to what we know, we won’t change anything – keeping possession of the ball.

“Aberdeen have done great over the past few seasons with finishing second. We’re aware it will be a tough game. It’s never easy going up to Pittodrie.

“I think my record is all right there. These are the games you want to play in. It’s one myself and the rest of the squad will relish.

“We’re under no illusions that we’ll have to be at our best to get something out of it. Winning 5- 0 in midweek was pleasing and that can only be good for confidence.

“In respect of the goalscoring, it probably was a return to our form of last season and we want to take that into Sunday.”
