WHAT'S THE SCORE

Steven Gerrard is paving the way for a stunning return to English football next month.

The former Liverpool and England legend’s contract with LA Galaxy expires in November and he is currently awaiting formal talks.

That means the iconic midfielder, 36, could be a free agent once Galaxy’s progress in the MLS play-offs is decided.

Gerrard said: “I’m wondering if I should play on for a little bit longer or call it a day.

“I still enjoy playing so if I can carry on and there are opportunities to stay here or go elsewhere for another six or 12 months I’ll consider it. But if nothing comes up I’ll try to fly through the coaching badges.” Ralf Rangnick last night denied England have made a fresh move for him after Sam Allardyce’s exit.

The German, sporting director at Red Bull Leipzig, confirmed he held talks about the job in the summer before Allardyce was appointed.

Rangnick, one of the favourites to succeed Allardyce, said: “A few days after the Euro 2016 final I had a good two-hour talk with the English FA’s technical director Dan Ashworth about becoming England manager.

“But a day later Ashworth informed me they wanted an English manager. Since then there’s been no more contact.” Manchester United have launched a raid on rivals City for a group of four scouts who have helped make the Blues the kings of youth development.

United have offered the quartet pay-rises of up to 50 per cent on what they are earning at the Etihad.

One scout has told City he is leaving for Old Trafford but City are hopeful they can keep the other three. Sunderland are waiting anxiously to learn if they will have to fork out £8m to Inter Milan over the Ricky Alvarez affair.

The Argentine spent a year on loan in 2014-15 and a clause in the deal compelled the Black Cats to sign him for £8m if they beat the drop, which they did. But Alvarez started only eight games due to injury and Sunderland argued Inter’s decision to delay his knee surgery was a breach of contract and grounds to abandon the deal.

The case was referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Sunderland boss David Moyes said: “I think it is coming to a head but there has been no decision yet.” Everton are hot on the trail of Se villa midfielder Steven Nzonzi. The former Blackburn and Stoke star has a £20m buyout clause in his deal.
