Forget Old Firm, it’s here we go 10 in row for City

-

There might be a huge game at Hampden today between the country’s biggest rivals.

But while most people in Scotland will be immersed in the Old Firm semi-final I’ll be more interested in one of the women’s game’s major contests.

The biggest rivalry at our level is when Glasgow City face off against Hibs.

And today, with City only needing a point against the Hibees to win a 10th title in a row, it couldn’t be any more vital.

In the women’s game, rivalries tend to come from the teams who are battling it out for honours.

And in recent history, City and Hibs have been the best sides in the country.

Clearly, City have had the edge but Hibs have run them very close.

Today, they will battle it out at Airdrie with Hibs hoping to spoil the title party.

Both City and Hibs have internationals at youth and full level. And many trophies in the women’s game have been decided by who wins those match-ups.

If you’re going up against a fellow international in the same position, you want to prove you should be the one playing for Scotland.

Anna Signeul, the national coach, will be there at the big game today. And with Scotland having qualified for the Euros, everyone wants a place in that squad.

The Old Firm game has a habit of becoming quite heated and it can boil over.

In women’s football challenges also go in. Tempers flare but never to the point where it’s outrageous.

There are niggles and a bit of banter between players. That happens in competitive sport and Hibs will be determined not to give Glasgow the point they need.

You’d never want a team to win their league in a game against your club.

The flip side is, City will be desperate to win the title against their biggest rivals.

So I’m sure there will be a few tasty challenges going in but that will only make the match more exciting.

Unfortunately, we don’t get the crowds that can make these games more feisty. That’s a big difference to men’s football.

Hibs have come so close to pipping City several times but it’s Glasgow’s title to lose as they also still have to play Rangers. So I have to tip them to seal 10 in a row today.

As for the Old Firm game, I expect it to be tighter than the last one. But, just like City, I think Celtic will be too strong in attack.
