HURT WON’T HEAL

Snoddy admits Wembley woe will scar the squad

“I made the run and it’s up to him to find me. Maybe on another day he plays me in and we get the goal.

“But I can’t point the finger at Leigh, his goal record is really unbelievable so I’m not going to deny him a scoring opportunity.

“As long as I’m getting into those areas I’m happy. The game plan was working well. I honestly don’t think we could have done any more.

“We worked hard as a team and didn’t just go down there to be part of the game.

“We showed if we stick to a plan and work hard for each other, we can cause upsets. But you have to get a goal.

“They only had three opportunities and scored from them.”

The spotl ight wi l l now be on Strachan and whether he’s still the right man for the job.

He will surely be considering his future with another qualifying campaign all but over.

But Snodgrass is adamant that his gaffer could have done no more at Wembley.

He insists the team selection and tactics were spot on – and it’s the Scotland players themselves who have to take responsibility for the result.

He said: “We have to take the focus away from the manager. He set out a team and a plan to win the game.

“Everyone called for Leigh to play and he played.

“That’s why the gaffer is in the hotseat, to make those decisions. As players, we have to take those chances when they come.

“For most of the game we matched England all over the park.

“The manager felt the same way as us after the game.

“There have been times when have we came in at the end of a match and said: ‘ We could have done this or that differently’.

“But on Friday night, I don’t think we could have done any more – apart from put the ball in the net.”
