HAMPDEN HOTSEAT CONTENDERS

MICHAEL O’NEILL

Currently Northern Ireland’s gaffer but could be tempted by the Scotland job. Having played for several clubs sides in this country, he knows our game inside out and still lives in Edinburgh.

Getting Northern Ireland to Euro 2016 was a minor miracle and their performances in France ensured that O’Neill’s stock continued to rise. The SFA would have to show intent by going to get him but he’d definitely be interested.

MALKY MACKAY

Has has all the credentials to be a Scotland manager but his name is tarnished now because of the text message scandal which got him sacked by Cardiff in 2013.

Tactically, he has proved himself to be a top boss and SFA chief Stewart Regan is well aware of his qualities. Mackay is a passionate Scot and he’s available.

DAVID MOYES

It wasn’t so long ago that Moyes was English football’s hottest property as Manchester United made him Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor.

But after being sacked at Old Trafford he lasted less than a year at Real Sociedad and is now struggling at Sunderland. The work he did at Everton can’t be ignored though and Moyes would bring experience, desire and passion to the job.

HEIN VANHAEZEBROUCK

Widely regarded as the best tactician in Belgian football and was mooted for their national team job before Roberto Martinez was appointed.

Worked wonders at minnows Kortrijk and is now doing the same at Gent. He took them into the Champions League last 16 last season after beating Zenit St Petersburg, Lyon and Valencia in the group stage.

LARS LAGERBACK

The experienced Swede has applied to become Scotland boss in the past and been left disappointed. How the SFA must regret that as he has gone on to have success with Sweden and most recently Iceland.

What he achieved with them at Euro 2016 was nothing short of remarkable, especially their win over England in the knock-out phase. His knowledge of the international scene is second to none and this might be Lagerback’s time with Scotland.
