Victory No2 over missed stations

-

The Sunday Mail won a second campaign victory last week when ScotRail boss Phil Verster pledged trains would stop missing out stations during rush hour.

The firm said they’d end the practice – known as skip-stopping – during the times it affects most passengers.

Trains will now halt at all scheduled stops 8am9am and 5pm-6pm.

The company said skip-stopping was being curtailed due to “customer feedback”.

The move followed our revelations last month that eight trains a day are missing scheduled stops to meet targets – leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

It’s the second win in our campaign after operators Abellio agreed to publish data on train overcrowding.

Skip-stopping sees drivers ordered by their control room to bypass stations to get the service back on time.

But it is causing mounting frustration for commuters, who either face waiting for the next train or, if they are on the train, having to get off miles from their stop.

Labour’s transport spokesman Neil Bibby said: “The Sunday Mail exposed the true extent of skip-stopping on Scotland’s railways and made it clear the chaos faced by commuters has got to stop.”

A ScotRail spokesman said of skip-stopping: “Late trains have a knock-on effect on other services, so taking action to get everything back on time is important.

“What we have decided to do is to make sure that we protect the services that carry the most people.”
