HOLDING OUT FOR A NIRO
Kia on track for eco hit after using hybrid technology in cool compact crossover
As car owners, we have a duty to do our bit for the environment but if you don’t want to trade your four wheels in for pedal power, you could buy a hybrid.
These cars combine fuel and electric power and deliver a more eco-friendly option.
Kia have decided it is time to get in on the action with the introduction of the Niro.
While hybrid technology isn’t a new concept, Kia have cleverly combined this fashionable trend with another – the compact crossover.
I was impressed by the Niro’s looks and eco technology. Under the bonnet, you have a 1.6-litre petrol engine combined with a 32kW electric motor with energy stored in a lithiumion battery.
This car is set to take on the l i kes of the Toyota Prius. But I think this Kia will win people over in the style stakes. The Niro sits in between the Cee’d and the Sportage in the Kia line-up and its design has definitely been created with the SUV market in mind.
On the outside, you get roof rails and black plastic cladding around the wheel arches. My model also had 16in alloy wheels, body- coloured door mirrors, chrome door handles, rear privacy glass and a spoiler.
Behind the wheel you get all the gadgetry you would expect to remind you of this car’s green credentials including diagrams and graphics telling you when you are driving at your eco best.
There is even an option thatth switches the heating to driverd only.
There are four trim levels to choosech from but the Niro 1 and 2 are exempt from road tax as they only pump out 88g/km of CO2.
My Niro 2 model was well equippedeq and had electric folding,fo heated door mirrors, leatherle steering wheel, dual aira conditioning, electric windows, adaptive cruise control, memory seat function, steering wheel mounted controls and sat nav.
The 7in touchscreen system was simple to operate. The cabin was spacious while storage was good throughout, with the rear seats folding flat.
On the road, the cabin was quiet, especially when only using electric power. The automatic gearbox was a bonus. The steering was light and responsive and, thanks to the parking sensors and cameras, manoeuvring this car couldn’t have been easier.
If you fancy yourself as an eco-warrior but want to stay stylish, this Kia is definitely worth a look.
