LUNACY IN LEYTON

Woods: I’m glad I’m north again

- Scott McDermott

At Leyton Orient he couldn’t understand his gaffer and the crazy Italian owner was picking the team.

Yet, in the dressing-room, Gary Woods would hear players slagging off Scottish football.

Having sampled our top flight, the 26-year-old Hamilton Accies keeper knows where he’d rather be.

He had offers from English League One sides in the summer but instead opted for the Superseal Stadium.

Woods’ time at Orient was eventful under Francesco Becchetti.

And now the Englishman is delighted to be settled in

Lanarkshire. He’s Martin Canning’s No.1 after on-loan Norwich ace Remi Matthews picked up an injury.

And as he prepared for tomorrow night’s Premiership clash with Hearts, the former Ross County shot-stopper (right) said: “When you are down south, the Scottish league has a bad reputation.

“But now, a lot more players are coming here. It ’s because teams are playing a lot more football on the floor.

“I was at Leyton Orient before and everyone has read aboutwhat went on there.

“You had an Italian owner with such a strong hold on things, which is rare for a League One club.

“We had an Italian coach, Fabio Liverani, who didn’t speak any English.

“When the gaffer here called me, I thought to myself, ‘ Why not?’.”
