THE MISSING LINKS

WRITERS PROMISE ALL WILL BE REVEALED IN LAST EPISODE OF WHODUNNIT

- Lynne McPherson

The Missing will return for a third series after consistently drawing in audiences of up to six million viewers. The second series of the BBC1 drama – written by Harry and Jack Williams – has gripped fans with twists and turns and Scottish actor Derek Riddell has played its chilling villain. The Williams brothers say all will be revealed in the final episode. We discuss the most burning questions raised by the excellent TV whodunnit. Are there clues to what happened in the opening credits of the show?

Yes – the show’s creators have revealed these are in fact highly significant and contain pieces of the jigsaw.

Many of these images will now make sense to viewers, including the child twiddling her fingers and the road seen through the window of a yellow camper van. Some have multiple meanings – could the fallen soldier be Daniel Reed, shot in combat in Iraq?

There’s also a frame that bears the number “3” which could signify the number of girls abducted or the three men involved in the Iraq incident.

What is Alice Webster’s father Sam hiding?

Theories abound on whether the soldier has had multiple affairs and fathered more children.

It would explain the positive DNA test on the body found in the shed which Gemma Webster was told was “matched her against her father”.

We now know that Alice Webster is still alive, so could it have been the third girl, Lena Garber? It could explain Sophie later throwing her red glasses on the fire. But could also the results of the DNA test have been fixed?

Could Sam have known psychopathic killer Will, played by Riddell, before he became the Army’s press officer?

It’s possible that the pair served together. Sam’s wife Gemma refers to the fact at one stage that he has spent much of their marriage away from the family home.

Who is the Middle Eastern man following Baptiste?

Many viewers have questioned whether or not he actually exists or whether he is a hallucination caused by Baptiste’s brain tumour. One theory is he’s the doctor who is operating on Baptiste’s tumour and coming through into his subconscious.

What are the scenes that the writers say were cut?

One of the major cuts was a plot line which explained how Sam and Gemma Webster’s son Matthew became involved with the thuggish, rap-loving

German twins Ulf and Axel. They bully a young man with Down’s syndrome who works at a butcher’s shop and passes their home to get to work. One day he blurts out something about the butcher, who has been arrested for Alice’s abduction.

The twins then break in and beat the butcher’s wife Nadia into a coma. Matthew sees butcher Andreas at the hospital with flowers for Nadia and he tells her he feels it’s his fault the twins attacked her. But instead of going to the police, Matthew covers up for them.

Was Henry Reed murdered and by who?

Reed regularly sent money to Iraq so clearly felt guilt at the accidental death of the young girl in the fire. Could he have killed himself out of the guilt or was he murdered by either Adrian Stone or Adam Gettrick as they feared he was going to talk? We also don’t yet know just why Sophie put flowers on Henry Reed’s grave.

Where is the body of policeman Jorn Lenhart? And why did he give a music CD to Eve Stone?

The German policeman was gruesomely stabbed in the head with a power drill by Gettrick and his body was abandoned in the boot of a car.

The killer sent a text from Jorn’s phone to one of his colleagues saying he would be gone for a few days.

Is the CD with a song he recorded for Eve Stone, a woman he was romantically interested in, significant? He had a conversation on the phone while recording the song, which she will hear when she listens to the CD.

Is Sophie, who pretended to be Alice, really the mother of the little girl Lucy?

We know that she did have a child as medics told Gemma that after Sophie received hospital treatment when she first turned up.

But Lucy drew a picture of her and mother locked in the basement. We now know that Gettrick kept Alice in the basement, so Alice could be her real mother.

It would explain why Gettrick, who has shown a ruthless killing streak, has kept her alive. Is Julien Baptiste going to die? The central figure of both series, the fate of Baptiste, played by actor Tcheky Karyo, hangs in the balance.

The French detective is suffering from a brain tumour and fled from the hospital where he was due to undergo life-saving surgery to insteadtead pursue the case of the missing girls. rls.

Many viewers have said they don’t want a third series without him – but the creators have publicly said that the story comes first – could thathat be a clue as to his fate?

Are we really going too discover why the girls were taken? en?

Writers Harry and Jack haveve promised viewers that there will bee a clear-cut ending to this series.

Viewers were divided whenhen the finale of the first series left it openn with James Nesbit t’ s character Tony still desperately searching for his son.

The Williams say they listened to feedback and that there will be no ambiguity this time andnd have said: “So if you’re looking for answers, we promise you’ll get them. The last episode of The Missingssing is on Wednesday at 9pmm on BBC1.
