Another Ronnie rehash

-

Cristiano Ronaldo’s timing on the football pitch has always been impeccable.

As we planned to review his latest biography he hit the headlines again last week by picking up his fourth Ballon D’or, pipping his fierce rival Lionel Messi to the award.

The Portugese superstar was always odds-on favourite to pick up the accolade after a stellar season with club and country.

Ronaldo won both the Champions League with Real Madrid and the European Championship with Portugal.

Oh and 38 goals in 42 games in 2016 probably helped too.

Literally hundreds of books have been written about CR7’s rise to the top.

This latest offering by Spanish footbal l expert Guillem Balague has been met with mixed reviews. It’s easy to see why. Ronaldo’s story is already common knowledge and this book offers very little in the way of fresh insight.

There is also far too much input from the author, who should take a back-seat more t h a n he does here.

Balague focuses on Ronaldo’s hard work a nd h i s drive to be the best.

But this become s repetitive. There are only so many times you can read about Ronaldo completing a mind- boggling number of bench presses without feeling bored.

The b o ok wou ld h ave benefitted from studying the actual motivations that spur the 31-year-old forward on.

Yes, he is a supremely talented footballer, but it has been his commitment and mental strengths that have pushed him to the very top.

Ronaldo said last week that he’ll be around for many more years yet.

Hopefully this will give someone else the opportunity to properly pick the mind of one of the greatest players of all time, and write his definitive biography.
