enough to stop Aberdeen overtaking them on goal difference, with the Dons also having a game in hand.

And supporters vented their anger at a run which has now seen them win only one league game in five.

Warburton said: “The support was very good but they’re going to boo – they expect to win at home.

“I don’t think they can accuse the players of not giving everything in the second half. There was wave after wave of going forward.

“Wes Foderingham had one save from a free-kick in the 92nd minute. That was the total of his contribution in the second half.

“I’ve been told we had 15 corners to one, 24 attempts but we scored one goal.

“There were countless free-kicks but three or four over the bar. That’s where we need that bit of quality.

“We have to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Warburton shook up his defence after a hammering at Hearts, bringing Philippe Senderos back for his first game in four months.

But he admit s the defending which cost them Alex Schalk’s opener was “schoolboy” stuff.

He said: “It was a poor goal to give away. The result of that was that we were poor for the next 15 minutes then finished the half strongly.

“To give away a schoolboy goal like that can’t happen.”

Asked about his decision to leave Rob Kiernan out of his 18, he said: “We have to use the squad.

“It’s intense for the boys playing in front of 50,000 with the expectation.

“Sometimes you have to take players out of the firing line a little bit for a couple of games and then look to get them back in fit and well.”
