Couple fear for daughter’s safety

Additional reporting by Jane Barrie Lynsey Anderson got the fright of her life when an elect ric blanket caught fire as her daughter lay reading in bed.

Quick- thinking Lynsey grabbed the seven- year- old and got her to safety while husband Mark stopped the fire from spreading.

But the traumatised couple called me in when there was still no resolution from manufacturer Morphy Richards, four months down the line.

Mark, 35, said: “I’m appalled and angry at the way we’re being treated. There was a plume of smoke and sparks flying everywhere.

“And this from a blanket which is advertised as having an overheat system and cut-off switch.

“If we hadn’t been there, the whole room could have gone up.”

Mark, an assistant manager with a glazing f irm, had switched on the blanket as Bethany lay on his bed with her iPad on November 10.

He said: “I was out in the hall when Bethany shouted that she could hear and smell party poppers.

“I didn’t know what she was talking about at first. Then the smell became more intense so I pulled back the duvet and saw electrical sparks. “The bed was smouldering and burning and I could hear frazzling noises.”

Ma rk , of L a rk ha l l , Lanarkshire, pulled the plug from the wall and managed to extinguish the fire.

But the bed was ruined as the blanket had burned two holes in the mattress. Lynsey, 35, also mum to 18-month-old Harry, contacted Morphy Richards the next day.

Mark said: “They collected the blanket for inspection and sent us a new one, which was the last thing we wanted.”
