Dundee wizard Wighton is tired of being touted as next big thing and knows it’s time to turn on magic

Craig Wighton has been touted as a future Scotland star since he was 15 – but knows it’s now time for him to prove why.

The Dundee kid will be 20 in July and he’s fed up with people talking about his potential.

He’s now an establishe­d member of Paul Hartley’s first team and has the backing of mentor Scot Gemmill with Scotland U-21s.

Wighton, who’s cal led “the wizard” by his Dens team-mates, insists he must now produce his magic on a regular basis.

As he prepared for the Scotland U-21 side’s friendly with Estonia on Tuesday, the frontman said: “I feel pressure on my shoulders now to show people what I can do.

“I’ve been in and about the firstteam at Dundee since I was 15 so there’s expectatio­n on me.

“Dundee is a small place that way. I’ve been aware of people building me up but I’ve tried to not let it affect me.

“I’ve worked hard to get to where I am now. But I’m 20 soon and don’t want to be talked about as ‘potential’ any more.

“That’s good when you’re 16 but not at 20. Getting to the age I am, I want to be playing every week.

“I want people to see me as an establishe­d, good player for Dundee and Scotland. To kick on to the next stage of my career, I have to do it.

“It’s up to me to do it. People can help me but ultimately I have to do it for myself.”

Wighton was part of the U-17 s q u a d who reached a Euro Championsh­ip semi-final in Malta three years ago.

He’s now in the U-21 set up and is delighted he has a coach who believes
