in him. The Dundee kid has also backed Gemmill’s plan to expose younger players to U-21 level early.

Wighton said: “If you look at what Scot has done with the current U-17 group, it shows how good a coach he is. I enjoy working with him and feel that I learn a lot whenever I’m away with him.

“Having a manager who believes in you is so important.

“And Scot has always been good with me. Even at times when I wasn’t in the squad he’d phone me to explain why.

“And he’s doing the right thing by picking younger boys in the squad. That’s the way to go.

“We’ve tried other things at that level and it hasn’t worked. We need to do something different now. “On the last trip to Macedonia, although we lost, it was a great learning experience for the young boys and it will stand us in good stead for future campaigns.” Wighton has been in and out of Hartley’s Dundee side this term. After forging a good striking partnership with Canadian hitman Marcus Haber, he’s now playing out wide following the January arrival of Henrik Ojamaa. The young Scot felt he was thriving alongside Haber but is now willing to learn a new position. He said: “At the start of the season I didn’t play much. I had to be patient but when I got my chance, it was my best spell with Marcus up front. “Marcus and I are complete opposites as players but that’s maybe why we hit it off. “Now, I’ve been asked to play a bit wider. It’s not my natural position but I’m enjoying it.”
