GUN WAR

Cops foil SIX new planned shootings 20 told: Your lives are under threat

- Derek Alexander

At least six new gun attacks in a violent gang war were thwarted in a secret police operation.

Armed police swooped on more than 20 addresses to serve special disruption notices and warn people their lives were at risk. The act ion was taken following a wave of tit-for-tat shootings across Glasgow.

At least six new armed attacks in Scotland’s most violent gun war for decades have been thwarted in a secret police operation.

A Sunday Mail investigation today reveals detectives have issued six disruption notices to dangerous criminals within the last fortnight.

We can also reveal Police Scotland have told more than 20 members of the r ival Daniel and Lyons crime gangs that their lives are at risk.

The individuals have been given so-called Osman warnings at their homes by armed officers after a wave of tit-for-tat shootings.

The di s r upt ion notices are served on violent criminals when police have reliable intelligence that they are pl an n i n g a serious attack.

Among those to get a notice are Robert Daniel, Francis “Fraggle” Green – son of late mob boss Jamie Daniel – and Lyons l ieutenant Victor Gallagher. They also got Osman warnings.

Another to have received a notice is Jamie Daniel’s nephew Steven “Bonzo” Daniel.

As many as eight officers – some with guns – were deployed to issue each warning.

Suspects have been visited at their homes in the early hours in pat ro l ca r s a nd unmarked vehicles.

Pol ice Scot l and declined to comment.

But a source said: “This has been a major operation over the last couple of weeks aimed at disrupting the criminal activities of these gangs.

“There have been genuine concerns the war has the potential to get out of control.

“The message to them is that the police are in charge and violence won’t be tolerated.

”Armed officers were there to reinforce that message.”

Police Scotland’s crackdown follows failed hits on Robert Daniel, Green and Lyons gang member Ross Monaghan.

It is understood several crime figures spoken to by officers have moved out of their homes as tensions between the factions intensify.

A source added: “Police are going round every Lyons and Daniel associate and giving them warnings.

“They’ve even gone to the relatives of some and told them their lives are in danger.”

The Lyons gang is led by Steven Lyons who lives in Spain. Key f igures include his brother Edward, Andrew Gallacher, Victor Gallagher and Monaghan.

The Daniel clan was headed by Jamie Daniel until he died from cancer last year.

His nephews Robert and Steven Daniel and sons Green and Zander Sutherland are among its members.

They are closely linked to Ross Sherlock, who was hurt in a gun attack outside St Helen’s primary school in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, in 2015, and Edinburgh crime figure Mark Richardson.

Drug dealer Sutherland was last week involved in a violent incident in Low Moss Prison.

Sutherland – serving 13 years for trafficking heroin – suffered minor injuries f ighting with another inmate.

It was the second time he has been at the centre of violence in the prison in recent months.

Sources say he has recruited two Polish cons as bodyguards.

One insider said: “Sutherland won’t leave his cell unless he’s escorted by his Polish minders.

“He’s trying to have as little direct contact with the mainstream prison population as possible.”

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: “We don’t comment on indiv idua l prisoners.”

Glasgow has seen a series of gangland shootings in the last 12 months. Drug dealer Euan Johnston was shot dead at traffic lights in Kinning Park on November 16. His funeral took place last week.

Police are also probing the attempted murder of florist and convicted knife thug Ross Craig, 34, who was shot in the leg outside his home in Shawlands on March 9.

On March 12, Robert Daniel, 42, was shot in Stepps, near Glasgow, as he reversed his grey Skoda Octavia out of his driveway.

Osman warnings are named after London businessman Ali Osman, who was murdered by Paul Paget-Lewis, a teacher at his son’s school, in 1988.

The message to them is that the police are in charge and violence won’t be tolerated
