Author Charles in 14 years of therapy
The Prince of Wales spent 14 years in psychotherapy because of Diana’s emotional instability, a new book claims.
Charles asked a top psychoanalyst to visit his wife when she broke down during their honeymoon – but ended up having regular sessions himself.
Revelations about the extent of the couple’s psychiatric issues wi l l stun many royal fans.
At the height of the so- cal led “War of the Waleses” in the 90s, Charles was por t rayed as an uncaring adulterer and Diana the victim.
But in “Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life”, author Sally Bedell Smith says Di’s demons emerged during their Balmoral honeymoon in 1981.
Charles asked for advice and was recommended therapy with psychiatrist Dr Alan McGlashan.
Diana saw him eight times but Charles continued until the mid-90s.
Friends of the couple revealed the “extreme symptoms of Diana’s mental instability” like bulimia, sel f- harm and suicide attempts.
A source said: “There are two sides to everything.
“The prince did genuinely try in his first marriage until it had broken down.”
The book also reveals how Charles tried to halt the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 “to honour Ramadan”.
He begged a US ambassador to ask George Bush to stop 20,000 American and British troops, saying: “America can do anything.”
