It’s bar, pub, boozer..or Lebowskis if you’re not into the whole brevity thing

Finnieston in Glasgow is celebrating being hailed as Britain’s hippest place – helped in no small part by Lebowskis.

The American- style bar helped blaze a trail for a miniexplosion of trendy pubs and restaurants that have seen the area considered Scotland’s answer to trend-setting London borough Shoreditch.

Finnieston was recently rated No1 in a Top 20 of the UK’s most buzzing neighbourhoods.

The boozer is named after cult hit film The Big Lebowski. I’ve always thought the crime caper flick starring Jeff Bridges as The Dude was overrated... but its namesake is top-notch.

The service is far from laidback and the eager-to-please staff act as if they are on speed rather than The Dude’s more mellow drug of choice. They were almost queuing up to help get us seated. Lebowskis boasts an eclectic mix of craft beers, allowing you to choose from wackily named brews such as Hurricane Jack, Birds & Bees and March of the Penguins.

Sampling the signature white Russian cocktails is a must.

And there’s a skull- shaped bottle of vodka behind the bar that looked worthy of further investigation. Maybe next time.

We visited midweek and, even on a school night, there was a good buzz in the busy bar.

The food is American with a Scottish twist. The place prides itself on the quality of its burger. I fancied trying the lamb and haggis pie but opted for a steak in the end and it was yummy.

My pal reckoned his chilli dog was a bit firm but said it was probably because it had some actual meat in it for a change.

There were some gripes. There was a draught where we were seated, my drinking pals weren’t too impressed with being booted from our table as soon as we had finished eating and, once the band got playing, we struggled to hear ourselves talking over the racket.

Still, Lebowskis has plenty to shout about.
