999 whales in danger

-

Sources said the proposed book was to focus on Operation Grange, the £ 10million Metropolitan Police probe into Maddie’s disappearance.

Amaral’s first book was published three days after Portuguese authorities closed the inquiry in 2008 and cleared Kate and Gerry, both 48, of any wrongdoing.

The pair, from Rothley, Leicestershire, said the book sparked a “massive tidal wave of lies” against them.

Last week, they lost a third and final appeal to silence Amaral in Portugal’s Supreme Court.

Maddie vanished from a Praia da Luz holiday flat on May 3, 2007. Norway has begun its annual six- month whale hunt season with a quota of 999 minke whales – up from 880 animals last year.

The International Whaling Commission imposed a commercial ban on whaling in 1986 but Norway objected.

Norwegian off icials estimate there are more than 100,000 North Atlantic minke whales – meaning they are not an endangered species – off Norway. to rememberremember, PawPawBroonBroon’s ordering in any Chinese restaurant – when he confidently chose the “number 42” and was invariably presented with something like a boiled egg with parsley on top – was a classic example of a self-pumping.)

Or, when the kids were younger, not eating your dinner and then being hungry later qualified as vintage self-pumping.

With the triggering of Article 50, the UK has self- pumped. What is worse, according to research released last week by the cross-party think tank Demos, it is largely the people who voted most overwhelmingly to leave Europe who have self-pumped the most ferociously.

Take Wales, for instance. It turns out that with the UK exiting Europe with no trade deal in place, Wales will face the possibility of real barriers on their export of things such as Welsh lamb to Europe.

It will also be facing the loss of all EU grants and subsidies it received. (Wales sends 67 per cent of its exports to the EU and is three times as dependent on EU grants as the rest of the UK.) But still, Wales, feel all that control you’ve got back.

Or take the north- east of England, another area where Leave voters triumphed overwhelmingly last June. Between now and 2020, the North East Local Enterprise Partnership were due to receive £433million from the EU to create jobs, develop businesses and support research projects. (One of the highest “per-head” cash ratio grants in the UK.)

Additionally, about 100,000 jobs in the north- east are linked to exports to Europe. What damage wi l l be caused to all of this by a hard Brexit? It’s too early to tell but I guarantee you one thing: For the people of the north- east, that Leave result in June last year is suddenly looking less like a “triumph” and more like what it is – a colossal self-pumping. It’s not just me saying this, by the way. A poll conducted by The Chronicle in the north- east last December suggested that if Brexit voters had a chance to vote again, 73 per cent would vote to Remain. Anyway, I’m doing fine, thanks. I’m a pretty self-reliant straight white male with a fairly marketable skill set. So I don’t vote for my own interests. I vote with those less fortunate than myself in mind. The people who will be worst affected by benefit cuts and price rises. The people who will suffer the most when the EU begins withdrawing their grants and subsidies. The people of Wales and the north-east of England. The self-pumpers. But still, feel all that control, eh?
