Waghorn wants to extend deal so he can emulate legendary Gers No.9s

played just off the striker and it has been hard at times.

“You need games and chances to score. Now I’m playing through the middle again, I feel I’m getting that fluidity once more.

“The guys I looked at were people like Boyd who scored a lot of goals over a number of years here.

“Before him, legends like McCoist obviously scored a lot.

“You don’t need me to name them all. But they’ve been focal points for the attack here – you know they’ll score goals for you.

“At a big club like this it’s important to have someone like that.

“Hop e f u l l y I can emulate these guys.”

To do that, Waghorn needs to stay at the club for the long haul.

And now Caixinha is in charge, he’s keen to extend his contract at Ibrox with his family now settled in Scotland.

When he was left out of the side by previous boss Mark Warburton last term, rumours of a rift between them led to reports that he wanted out.

But Waghorn insists he’s happy at Gers and, due to a slight change in system from Caixinha, he feels he can be a regular scorer.

He said: “Myself and Mark did get on. For whatever reason, I wasn’t playing and he picked other options.

“He was playing other people and I just had to get on with it. But we didn’t argue or fall out.

“I’ve never thought about leaving this club. At the point when there were rumours about me falling out with the manager I still had 18 months left on my contract.

“I was just desperate to get back in the side and stay there because I know what I can offer this team.

“It has never once crossed my mind to chuck in the towel. I’ve still got a lot to prove at Rangers.

“I have more trophies to win in my career and I want to do it here. I’ve said that since I signed for Rangers. I want to play in big games and win silverware.

“I feel I’m at a good stage in my career where I can really kick on.

“To do that you need to be here for a while and my focus is now to be here long-term.

“I’m real ly happy at Rangers, my family is all settled. I’m going into my final year so it’s up to the board but I don’t want to go anywhere.

“This season was about getting back playing again. Hopefully the rest will take care of itself.

“I have at least another year at the club. We have objectives now to reach a final and nail a European place – that’s al l I’m thinking about.

“R e c ent l y we ’ v e tweaked the formation to a 4-2-3-1.

“Me and Kenny Miller are a bit closer, we’re working more as a two. That suits the strikers at the club.”

And so far Waghorn is enjoying life under Caixinha – even if it means fewer days off.

He said: “It has been really good but different. The boys are working on new stuff, different training patterns and routines.

“We get fewer days off than we used to. But we have a job to do and we have big games coming up so the boys can sacrifice a little if it brings the results we want.”
