added: “We both want to do as well as we possibly can but, if only one of us can win, then I hope Louisa is the winner – and Louisa hopes it is me.”

The girls, who live in Glenrothes, are the first sisters to take part in the competition in the same year. And they have sympathy for the judges.

Louisa, a mental health nurse, said: “This isn’t just a competition about how you look – it’s about your personality too. But Christina and I are very similar in personality.

“We like the same things, we often say the same things at the same time and, two years in a row, we have bought our mum the same birthday present without realising.”

Christina, who is a paediatric nurse, added: “We are not identical twins but we do look very alike.

“We are both naturally caring people and empathetic towards others, which is probably why we became nurses. “It probably won’t be easy for the judges.” One difference between the twins is that Christina is a mum – to 10- month- old Amelia – while Louisa is yet to start a family.

Both girls want to use their appearance in the Miss Great Britain competition to raise awareness of issues close to their heart.

Louisa said: “I want to help promote the amazing work carried out by the charity Support In Mind Scotland.

“As a mental health nurse, I know anyone can suffer from mental illness and, sadly, there is still a stigma attached to mental health that doesn’t exist for other illnesses.

“Support In Mind Scotland are work ing so hard to increase understanding of mental illness and to support not only people suffering from mental health issues but their families and carers too.”

Christina added: “I’m supporting the Cookie Jar Foundation – a local charity set up to continue the legacy of a young lad called Christopher ‘Cookie’ Coutts, who died aged just 19 from Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“The charity does so much to help so went on to become top fashion designers.

And Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen started off her career by joining a modelling course with her twin Patricia, who is now the star’s manager. many good causes, including supporting children in the hospital wards where I have worked.”

The girls, who have an older sister, Nicola, plan to take part in a range of fundraising activities for the two charities before the competition final in September.

Louisa added: “We were never girly girls when we were younger. We were sporty girls who loved playing football, rugby, netball, tennis and golf.

“So we are planning to do lots of fun things, including a skydive, to help raise money and awareness.

“When we were about five, we took part in a fashion show but that’s the only modelling we have done until now.”

Christina added: “We’ve both always been very dedicated to our careers but this competition will be a good opportunity for us to achieve something totally different.”

Jemma Simmonds, of Miss Great Britain, said: “This is the first time, as far as we are aware, we have ever had sisters in the competition, let alone twins.

“Both girls impressed us with their personalities and we loved that they are both nurses too.”

It really won’t be easy for the judges because we are just so similar
