Small wonder my City boys earned a place in big time

-

Darren Dods insisted small is beautiful after Brechin won a place among the big boys of the Championship.

Fol lowing a pulsating second leg at Recreation Park, it took a penalty shoot-out to separate the sides, with James Dale converting the penalty that ended Alloa’s promotion hopes.

Brechin, who had already knocked out Raith Rovers, finished the regular season 12 points behind the Wasps.

And after seeing his side make it to the second tier for the first time since 2006, Brechin boss Dods said: “We were the underdogs going into the play-offs, against Raith, and we came through that.

“Then we were underdogs against Alloa coming here.

“All credit to Alloa, they kept clawing us back, but we never gave up. We had injuries and boys cramping up but we hung in there and won. It’s an amazing achievement.

“For Brechin, the smallest town in Angus, to get there with this group of players, probably the smallest squad in the league, it’s unbelievable effort from the players that has got us there.”

Greig Spence had cancelled out Dale’s opener from the spot in normal time before putting Jim Goodwin’s Wasps side in front.

City captain Paul McLean then atoned for giving away the penalty by heading in Willie Dyer’s corner before Spence completed his hat- trick with a fantastic overhead kick.

Liam Watt put Brechin back in the driving seat with a cool finish in the 78th minute. But Dylan Mackin took the final into extra-time with a close range header seconds later.
