One side of his face and head have serious injuries. He’s very lucky to be alive

Gang boss Steven Daniel used a pen and paper to tell police to “**** off” after his injuries left him unable to speak.

The 37-year-old – nicknamed Bonzo – had his tongue shredded and his teeth and jaw bone left exposed in a knife attack so violent it was originally though the had been shot.

Detect ives have been desperate for information on the ambush, which happened on a slip road off Glasgow’s M8 just after midnight on Thursday morning and have been grilling Daniel.

But the crime chief is refusing to cooperate and will not give them descriptions of his attackers, despite repeated requests to write them down.

Daniel is still being treated in the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where staff have described his condition as stable. He will undergo months of painful reconstruction surgery to his face, which suffered horrific injuries.

It’s thought he is being treated for muscle and nerve damage, including serious injuries to his mouth, nose and eye. A source said: “Bonzo is in a bad condition. But the police haven’t been giving him any rest and keep asking him for information and a description of his attackers.

“He can’t speak so they keep giving him a piece of paper and a pen and want him to write the details down.

“But he keeps refusing – the only thing he’s written down is ‘**** off’.

“His tongue looks like it’s been shredded in the attack and one side of his face and head have suffered very serious injuries.

“He’ ll probably be in hospital for a while. He’s very lucky to be alive.”

A police officer has been told to stand guard at his room and visitors have to sign in.

Daniel is a nephew of notorious crime boss Jamie Daniel, who died of cancer last year.

His mother is professional shoplifter Annette Daniel.

A private room used by his family and friends was vandalised as they struggled to come to terms with his condition.

The incident is the latest tit-for-tat attack between the notorious Daniel clan and their Lyons crime family rivals. Daniel – who is closely linked to taxi firm Key

Cars – was targeted as he drove a dark blue Skoda Octavia private hire vehicle along Saracen Street. He noticed he was being tailed by a VW Golf and an Audi before speeding off.

But the drivers gave chase and crashed into him on Craighall Road near a slip road on to the motorway.

The vehicles used in the attack were later found burned out.

Police Scotland declined to comment on Daniel’s injuries.

A spokeswoman added: “Investigations are ongoing.”

Daniel’s cousin Robert Daniel was shot outside his home in Stepps, near Glasgow, in March. Ross Sherlock, a close associate of the Daniels, was slashed in the neck while being held in Low Moss prison in the same month.

A gunman also opened fire on the home of Francis “Fraggle” Green – son of Jamie Daniel – in Milton of Campsie, East Dunbartonshire, in February.

The attacks took place after gangland figure Ross Monaghan was shot outside a school in Glasgow’s Penilee in January.

He is a high-ranking member of the Lyons crime gang, headed by Steven Lyons, who is based in Spain.
