It’s the wild things that make our hearts sing

Snappers Jewels on our doorstep

- Heather Greenaway

White sandy beaches, shimmering turquoise pools and magical waterfalls…it could be the Caribbean.

But as everyone who has been lucky enough to tour the western Highlands and islands during a hot summer, it’s all just a campervan ride from Scotland’s central belt.

A new book by three photographers showcases the very best of the nation’s natural jewels.

Kimberley Grant, 26, David Cooper, 29, and Richard Gaston, 27, spent two years camping, walking, swimming and eating their way around the Highlands and islands to discover the best adventures Scotland has to offer.

Lifestyle journalist Kimberley, from Glasgow, said: “No day for us was the same. We had the privilege to pitch our tent or park our tiny campervan at some of the most beautiful places on Earth, never mind Scotland.

“There was nothing glamorous about our travels. We did it all on a budget, cooking our food on a camping stove and washing in the streams. It was a wild adventure in the wilds of Scotland.

“Most of the time we were the only people for miles as the areas were so remote. There are things about some of the places that might deter folk, like midges or the weather, but if you are passionate about the great outdoors, these hidden gems are worth discovering.”

Co-author David, who grew up in the Shetland Isles, added: “The beauty of Scotland lies in its mystery and ephemeral nature. Every trip is different and gives you your own experiences that are unique.

“I think the greatest places are the ones I attach particular emotions too – happy, sad, exciting, romantic. Hopefully our guide will help people make lifelong memories.”

The book – Wild Guide Scotland : Hidden Places, Great Adventures & the Good Life – features 750 locations. Here, the authors take us through 10 of the best.
