Even a serious hospital stint couldn’t keep Windram from taking his team

- Gordon Waddell

“My daughter Samantha decided she fancied football about seven years ago, so I took her along to the community centre in Musselburgh. It led to the classic, ‘ You’re here every week watching, you might as well g e t inv o lved ’ conversation, then, ‘ Here’s a coaching jacket’ followed! “My son Jordan plays for the club at Under-13s as well and that’s the hardest bit for me, the fact I don’t get to see him play often enough. But the satisfaction from providing a platform for so many girls to enjoy themselves is tremendous for myself and Rab.

“This is the first year we’ve run an Under-17 girls team which brings on its own challenges with hormonal t e ena g e r s , right enough.

“We’re not putting pressure on them to win anything but we find that enjoying it brings its own success. We’re reaching milestones but it’s because they’re having fun and playing with their friends.

“It’s not about trophies for us – although we win some – it’s about a sense of community and the girls enjoying it.

“Some girls can be having a horrendous time at home and the few hours they spend with their pals with a ball at their feet might be the best hours of their day.

“The section is growing and growing – there’s a massive rise in girls and women’s football after the World Cup being televised a couple of years ago, then our women qualifying for the Euros. “I only wish I’d got involved when I

was younger, to be honest.”
