Bad weather’s taking charge

- Lynn McPherson

Pack away your shorts and put the suncream back in the cupboard – summer has been put on ice.

The forecast we’d all been dreading was finally delivered yesterday as weather experts warned to brace for heavy showers, lower temperatures and windy spells for at least a week.

Parts of Scotland were hit by thunderstorms and even hail yesterday. A pro-independence rally on Glasgow Green turned soggy in the downpour.

And today, the best we can hope for is sunny spells among the showers and thunderstorms.

Frost was even predicted for some rural areas of Scotland this morning.

Met Office spokesman Fraser Ralston said: “There will be showers with the odd rumble of thunder in the afternoon although there wwill be sunny spells outwith the rain.

“June is often one of our more reliable mmonths but, at the moment, I don’t see a fine wweather day through the week ahead.

“It’s not looking great for the time of year anand is more typical of April. The weather is ststuck in a bit of a rut at the moment.”

Daytime temperatures will see a maximum of 16C and down to 7C at night, with gusts of wwinds of up to 40mph.

The forecaster added: “From Monday to WWednesday it’s very unsettled, not only across ScScotland but the whole of the UK.

“There will be a lot of cloud and periods of rarain and it will be quite breezy with a cool feel.

“I would never say summer’s over, we’ve on only just started officially on June 1, but th this week is not looking very summery, with a cchangeable weather pattern and definitely no heatwaves. “This next seven days don’t look promising if you’re after heat and sunshine.” The hottest day of the year was last month at Lossiemouth in Moray, where it hit 29.4C. Scotland had just two inches of rain in May, th the lowest of any part of the UK.

Fraser added: “In the past few weeks some pe people have come to me looking for rain be because it’s been so dry through the spring.

“The gardeners, farmers and fishermen are al all desperate for some rain so there will be a fe few happy folk.”
