Wee sister Eck made me deliver his papers
Former first minister Alex Salmond is at the centre of a child labour scandal – after his sister revealed he recruited her on his paper round.
Sibling Gail Hendry, 53, nine years younger than Salmond, is standing as an MSP for the SNP in the Ettrick, Roxburgh and Selkirk by- election.
And Gail revealed her famous brother used to make her work for a pittance helping him deliver papers as the pair grew up in Linlithgow, West Lothian.
She said: “He would give me papers and say, ‘ You deliver that house,’ ‘ You go there’ – and off we’d go.
“Occasionally, I’d get paid – but not a lot.”
She added: “Everybody thought he was the best paper boy because he would stand and speak to everybody. He was always like that.”
Special education teacher Gail aims to overturn a 7500 Tory majority in the seat vacated by John Lamont after he opted to stand for Westminster.
Salmond has been helping her campaign by wearing a badge saying “Gail Hendry’s brother” – but she insists nepotism is not at play.
Gail said: “We don’t see ourselves as a dynasty.
“I can hardly be described as a careerist politician – not at my age.
“I’m standing because the seat became available and I shout at the television a lot.
“Trump, the EU referendum, the Tory party getting more and more right wing.
“Somebody’s got to stand up and say, ‘ This isn’t right.’”
