Russell’s eyes on US Open

- Bernie McGuire

Russell Knox will play in the FedEx St Jude Classic in Memphis this week to help him prepare for next week’s US Open.

The Scot last played in the £5million event in Tennessee two years ago, finishing in a tie for eighth.

He said: “Things I have been tinkering with are starting to fall into place so my thinking is that rather than just be at home next week and spending time on the range I should go to Memphis.

“I’ve played there three times before, missing the cut the first twice. But two years ago everything seemed to click and I managed a top-10 finish so I am looking forward to going back there.”

Knox’s decision was helped by managing to end a run of two straight missed cuts by qualifying for all four rounds of the Memorial tournament in Columbus, Ohio, which concludes today.

And Scotland’s top-ranked golfer has done this while fighting a mystery bug.

He said: “I’ve pretty much shaken any ill-effects now so it is back to full steam ahead.

“I cruised to the cut in Ohio and it has been a long time since I did that. For instance, last year I played 25 events on the Tour and missed the cut in only four.

“This year I think I’ve played 13 events before this one and missed the cut in six, so this week is like taking a step back in the right direction for me.”
