Police At least 58 died in fire

-

The death toll in the Grenfell Tower disaster was estimated at 58 yesterday.

A total of 30 people are confirmed to have died with at least another 28 missing, police chiefs said.

It’s feared the final toll could rise to around 70.

Fifteen bodies have been recovered.

PM Theresa May met survivors yesterday and admitted support for families in the hours after the tragedy was “not good enough”.

The Government announced a minute’s silence for 11am tomorrow.

At the scene, Met Police’s Commander Stuart Cundy said: “Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in the tower on the night that are missing. Therefore, sadly, I have to assume that they are dead.”

He said the search was set to take “weeks or longer” and that the probe would be “exhaustive”.

Cundy added: “It is important for families that we do everything in there to find their loved ones.

“The investigation will identify any criminal offence that has been committed. It will be wide-ranging. It will look at the building itself. My intention is that the investigation will help provide answers.”

The PM, meanwhile, said a public inquiry into the disaster would report back to her and that councils have been told to complete urgent safety checks on all high-rise buildings.
