Family Guys make it big in Hollywood
Craig and Charlie would admit themselves that they make an unlikely global phenomenon.
But The Proclaimers have become one of Scotland’s biggest worldwide success stories thanks to their music being used in movies and TV shows.
It all started when I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) spent six months in the US Billboard charts in 1993 after appearing on the soundtrack of the Johnny Depp film Benny And Joon.
I’m On My Way also made a big impact in 2001 when it appeared in box office smash Shrek.
In 2006 they were in Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy with its star Peter Griffin attempting to sing I’m Gonna Be with them in the recording studio. And Homer Simpson sang a version in The Simpsons.
Craig and Charlie appeared with a host of celebrities in 2007 when Peter Kay and Matt Lucas released the same song for Comic Relief. It raised more than £1million.
Dales-set soap Emmerdale beckoned in 2012 when they appeared as headliners at the fictional Home Farm’s music festival in an episode marking the beginning of the ITV soap’s 40th birthday celebrations.
They had a non-speaking guest appearance in Sunshine on Leith – the 2013 movie of the stage musical written by River City creator Stephen Greenhorn – bumping into George McKay and Kevin Guthrie outside of a pub.
Their songs have been used in TV ads and the movies they have featured in include Pitch Perfect, Dumb & Dumber, The Crossing, Bottle Rocket, The Angel’s Share, The Commitments and Burke and Hare.
