Clark’s rooted to spot

-

Athletics starlet Zoey Clark could argue Dons boss Derek McInnes is following her lead by insisting staying in Aberdeen doesn’t mean settling for second best.

And that counts double for the 400 metres runner who wrapped up a month to remember last weekend by smashing her personal best in Geneva after polishing off a first-class degree.

The 22-year-old is set for her first senior appearance for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at this week’s European Team Championships in Lille.

Clark said: “I did have the option to go to Edinburgh but the resources we have in Aberdeen are amazing.

“The set-up is really good. My chemical engineering degree was available and my parents are supportive.

“Hannah Miley is from Aberdeen and I know her well. I’ve watched her do such amazing things and accomplish so much.”

Clark rocketed into top spot in the UK rankings with her stunning Swiss show of 51.84 seconds.

A top- two finish at the trials for August’s IAAF World Championships in London in a fortnight will seal a place in the team.

But first there’s a 4x400m outing in Lille alongside fellow Scots Eilidh Doyle and Kirsten McAslan.

Clark said: “My goal is to make the Commonwealth Games. There was an outside chance of getting to the World Championships and with my run last week there is that real chance.

“I don’t want to put more pressure on myself – but it is exciting.”

Jemma Reekie yesterday underlined her status as one to watch by booking her spot at next month’s European Junior Championship with victory in the 1500m at trials in Bedford.

Fellow Scot George Evans took Under-20 gold in the shot put while Sol Sweeney was second in the 3000m final to boost his case.
