Holyrood summit on Ned Central
A summit is being held at the Scottish Parliament on how to tackle anti- social behaviour at a train station branded the worst in Scotland.
Rai l union the RMT threatened to boycott Hami lton Central after assaults, f ires and drugtaking by teenage gangs.
Now t rade union s , Scotrail, Police Scotland, the British Transport Police and politicians will meet on Tuesday to discuss how to ensure the safety of the public and Scotrail staff.
SNP MSP for Hamilton Christina McKelvie said: “After I received word of the incidents within the station, I immediately sought a meeting with the RMT to discuss their planned action.
“These discussions were positive and constructive, leading to this summit.
“I’m looking forward to hearing how we can work together to find a resolution.”
We revealed last week how unions claim staff at the south Lanarkshire hub felt under siege.
Anti- social incidents in recent weeks include an elderly lady attacked by a youth in a drug- related assault and a passenger battered on a stairwell.
A Scotrai l Al l iance spokesman said: “These people are not being a nu i s a nc e , t he y a r e committing crimes. We will do our bit, but we need the other agencies – especially the police – to work with us.”
Michael Hogg, Scottish organiser of the RMT, said: “Enough is enough and the RMT demand action now.”
