TV favourites Mel and Sue will host a revamped version of The Generation Game.

The Saturday night series is returning after the BBC revealed it is the programme most viewers want back. Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will be the first women to host the programme made famous by Bruce Forsyth, who spawned the catchprase: “Didn’t they do well.”

The former Great British Bake Off hosts said: “It’s a cuddly toy, it’s a toaster, it’s a circular power saw – no, it’s Mel and Sue doing the Generation Game. We can’t believe it, we are so excited.”

The revamped show, which was launched in 1971, wi l l have a four-episode initial run – although the BBC have not revealed when it will start.

Charlotte Moore, director of content, said: “The Generation Game is an iconic BBC1 show, so to be able to bring it back for today’s audience with Mel and Sue overseeing things is a wonderful moment for the channel.”

The telly hit will combine elements from the original series with fresh ideas and involve a panel of star judges. Pairs of family members from across the generations will battle it out for the right to face the legendary conveyor belt.

Guy Freeman, BBC editor of special events and formats, said: “When asked, this is the TV show that viewers most wanted to see back.

“We are thrilled to be able to make that happen with Mel and Sue, who I know will have just as much fun hosting it as contestants will playing it.”
