Schoolboy dies in ice tragedy

A boy has died while ice skating with his friends at a leisure centre.

Workers tried desperatel­y to revive the 10-year- old when he collapsed but he died in hospital soon after.

The incident happened at the ice rink in Auchenharv­ie Leisure Centre in Stevenston, Ayrshire.

Police are treating Friday evening’s death of the boy, who has not been named, as unexplaine­d.

Staff at the facility, which

is owned by North Ayrshire Council, have been left in shock by the tragedy.

They gave the boy first aid before an ambulance crew took him to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.

Doctors were unable to save the youngster, who is thought to have suffered from an underlying medical condition.

Witnesses say he was not involved in an accident at the ice rink before he fell.

A source said: “It was a very upsetting incident. Everyone who was on duty has been affected by what happened.

“The boy seems to have collapsed without warning.”

The centre is run by KA Leisure on behalf of the council.

A KA spokesman said: “A boy collapsed suddenly, without warning, at the ice rink at Auchenhar v ie Leisure Centre early Friday evening.

“KA Leisure members of staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the young boy at this difficult time.”

A police spokeswoma­n said: “At around 6.20pm on Friday, a 10-year- old boy took unwell at Auchenharv­ie Leisure centre.

“The boy was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

“A post-mortem will take place to establish the cause of his death, which at this time officers are treating as unexplaine­d.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
