Fancy some peace and quiet with great grub? Pin your hopes on Sorn

-

The conservation village of Sorn in Ayrshire is so quiet that on weeknights you can sometimes hear a pin drop…so staff at the Sorn Inn told us – and even on a Sunday it turned out to be spot-on.

Luckily the food at the inn opposite the River Ayr speaks for itself. We dined in the Chop House and my starter of cauliflower croquettes with pea shoots and piccalilli puree was a knockout. The cook ing her e is accomplished and the ravioli of ham hock and foie gras with pea veloute and mint powder was another hit. There is a roast Sunday menu, with two courses for £15.95 and £17.95 for three, as well as pub classics such as real ale battered cod and chips with mushy p e a s a nd mum ’s steak pie. There’s a midweek steak meal deal that looked excellent value – two 8oz ribeye or sirloin steak with chips, two side dishes and sauces with two glasses of prosecco for £ 39.95.

But I reckon a good test of a pub menu is a burger, and this cheese and bacon number with handmade mince meat with came up trumps. It was a generous portion but there was just enough room for one dessert to share. The mango parfait with passion fruit curd and caramelised pineapple was tempting – but it had to be the waff les with ice cream and butterscotch sauce.

Even with two of us, it was a huge portion but we valiantly struggled until the plate was clear. As we surfaced for air, we realised that even though it was still before 9pm, we were the only customers in the place.

And as we settled our bill and left, you could indeed have heard that proverbial pin drop.
