Petrie so proud of Ainslie spark

-

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie hailed his makeshift side after they got their campaign off to a stunning start with victory over 10-man Edinburgh.

This was the f irst SPFL fixture to be played at Ainslie Park – temporary home of City while Meadowbank Stadium is refurbished.

And goals f rom Chr is Templeman, Connor McLaren and Iain Campbell sealed a deserved victory for the depleted Gable Endies.

Proud gaffer Petrie said: “We looked a real threat and I was particularly pleased because we came down here with nine players unavailable.

“It was a big ask as this is a difficult place to come to and Edinburgh are a good side but the players were up to it.

“We might have nicked another one or two on the break but it was a great way to start the league campaign.”

Montrose were on the front foot from the start and their early pressure was rewarded when they stormed ahead in 28 minutes.

awkward bounce deceived the City keeper, allowing the ball to slip past him.

The second goal arrived just two minutes later.

Chris Johnston’s initial effort was parried by Antell before the loose ball broke to McLaren who drove the ball into the net.

Templeman then struck the bar as Montrose pushed for a killer third.

And Campbel l secured the points early in the second half with a superbly struck free-kick.

Edinburgh defender Shaun Harrison was sent off with 10 minutes remaining for a second yellow card before Lewis Allan scored a late consolation.

It was a frustrating day for City gaffer Gary Jardine who said: “I’m not happy.

“We made some poor decisions today but Montrose were wel l organised and capitalised on our mistakes.

“The players know the performance was below the level expected.”
