Jim’s so sick on the draw

Late leveller stuns Wasps

-

Jim Goodwin admitted Alloa’s share of the spoils with title favourites Raith felt like a defeat.

The Wasps looked set for a dream start to their league campaign thanks to Kevin Cawley’s first-half strike.

But they were rocked when Lewis Vaughan fired home a 90th- minute leveller which left the home fans stunned.

Boss Goodwin said: “When you lose a goal as late on as that after defending as well as we did, it’s disappointing.

“But Raith were the better team in the second half and probably deserved a draw in the end when they threw everything at us. It’s frustrating from our point of view because we had opportunities to put the game to bed.”

The early stages saw Alloa in lively form. Scott Taggart whipped the ball across the face of goal but it was deflected away for a corner.

on the line by Neil Parry. They then missed a golden chance to level when Spence headed straight into the arms of Parry following a perfect delivery from Liam Buchanan.

The Kirkcaldy men came close again when a Euan Murray cross, directed towards Spence, nicked the post.

Raith made two changes at the break, bringing on Bobby Barr and Kevin McHattie. But it was Alloa who almost made it 2- 0, Craig Malcolm’s glancing header from a Taggart cross slipping just inches wide.

Barr tried his luck with a low drive for Raith but the ball was blocked to the relief of the home support.

Then Cawley had an overhead kick which was comfortably saved by Rovers keeper Aaron Lennox.

With the minutes ticking away, Lennox produced a superb diving save from Flannigan before he again made a brilliant block from Cawley.

But with only seconds left Vaughan broke Wasp hearts when he drilled home a pass from sub Jonathan Court.

Raith boss Barry Smith said: “We are not saying we played as well as we can but we had enough chances.

“The lesson today is how tough the league can be. But on the other side of it our boys kept going and showed they are not going to give up.”
