Big Phil gave Caixinha five skippers idea

that led to our second goal. He’s a clever player, the kind we need.

“I’ve always known him to be calm and the best example was my Scotland debut at Hampden when we beat the Czech Republic 1- 0. He got the man of the match award that night – he was so calm when it got tough.

“The crowd were on us but he’d stay composed, use his touch, pick a pass and use his body well. It was a great insight into his quality.”

Dorrans is part of a new-look Rangers spine that includes fellow summer signings Alves, Fabio Cardoso and Ryan Jack as well as Rangers veteran Miller.

In Caixinha’s 4- 4-2 system, which has been used in friendlies against Marseille, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday, the Ibrox side have looked more compact.

And Wallace added: “A strong spine will be important for us this season, especially the way we’ve set up since the Marseille game.

“Against Wat ford and Wednesday we’ve set up in a different way and there has been a feeling of solidity about us.

“I’m not saying it’ll be the perfect way for us all season. Because of the quality we faced, it was a tactical move from the gaffer that worked really well.

“It has been a positive couple of weeks and guys like Graham, Ryan, Fabio, Bruno and Kenny will be crucial for us moving forward.

“We’ve still got a long way to go – we’re still learning – but I’ve been very encouraged by the last few games.”

Pedro Caixinha has revealed his five captains idea at Rangers was inspired by legendary Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Ibrox skipper Lee Wallace talked last week about how he’s being helped in the role this season by Kenny Miller, Niko Kranjcar and new boys Bruno Alves and Graham Dorrans.

In the last year, Wallace and Miller have been weighed down by the responsibility of leading the Gers dressing room.

But the arrivals of Alves and Dorrans, as well as Kranjcar’s return from injury, has given Caixinha five big characters in his squad as he plans a trophy challenge.

And he says Big Phil’s Brazil side that won the World Cup in 2002 with full-back Cafu as captain is the perfect example of it can work.

He said: “I wanted to spread the leadership so I identified a type I learned from Scolari. The main captain was Cafu as he was the big leader. But then you have a silent guy in there who wants you to give him the ball so he can lead the team.

“We also need a guy shouting and, of course, the guy who sees everything on the pitch and organises – that’s another type of leadership.

“So with the five guys we have, I have it all together. For me it’s not important who wears the armband, even though Lee will keep it.”

Meanwhile, Caixinha has revealed he will work alongside new Ibrox Director of Football Mark Allen to source new players with the right profile.

The Portuguese coach has built a newlook squad on his own this summer but says Allen will have a key role identifying players who have what it takes to play for Rangers.

He said: “Mark will always be present with us. He’s also on the pitch with us at training so he’s keen to help. He wants to work closely with the staff and the players.

“The club now has a profile of players who can and can’t play for Rangers. We’re aware of it. When we finish with the organisation of this squad we’ll know which needs we’ll have in the next year.

“We know the direction we’re going in. Not randomly but specifically. And working together is what really matters. We’re working as a team, if you don’t do that you won’t achieve anything.”
