Girl, nine, killed in riots after election

-

A nine- year- old girl has been killed by a stray bullet during riots in Kenya.

Protests erupted after president Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner in elections overshadowed by fraud allegations.

The girl died in Nairobi, whi le two people were shot and killed by police in Kisumu, a city where opposition leader Rai la Odinga has strong support.

Another five people were injured by gunf i re in Kisumu, a regional police commander said.

Officers also opened fire in Mathare, a slum in Nairobi, where protesters blocked roads and set up burning barricades.

Resident Wycliff Mokaya said his daughter was killed while playing on their thirdfloor balcony.

The distraught dad said: “I was watching her play with her friends when she suddenly fell down. She was my only hope.”

Protesters, some armed with rocks or sticks, ran for cover as they came under fire in Kibera, another slum in the capital. A spokesman for Odinga’s party said one person died there.

Most of the country was calm yesterday.

The election commission announced on Friday that Kenyatta had won a second five-year term with 54 per cent of the vote.

In his victory speech, the president extended a “hand of friendship” to the opposition, who alleged that the election commission’s database had been hacked and results manipulated.
